Junior Hurlers draw with Monageer

In a very closely contested match the home team Shelmaliers drew 2-8 to Monageer’s 1-11 in the Junior hurling league in Hollymount.

A Shane Birney point after 5 minutes opened the scoring for the Shelmaliers, however, Monageer  fought  back with 3 unanswered point so their own to lead after 15 minutes. When the Shelmaliers were awarded a 21 yard free in the 18th minute up stepped ace scorer Conor ‘Bomber’ Byrne who shot straight to the net  and full forward Stephen Corrigan netted a second goal after 20 minutes. Shane Birney completed the Shelmalier scoring in the first half when pointing a fine score to leave his side trailing by 2-2 to 1-7 at half time. The Shels were show to get into the game in the second half with Monageer pointing twice to stretch their lead in the 10th minute. This spurred on the home team who took control of the game and points from Ciaran Walsh (2) Conor Byrne (2) and Mick Kelly left a two point margin to the home team with only minutes remaining in the game. However, two late points from the visitors ensured the spoils were shared in a great game of hurling.
