A sparkling performance from Ferns seen them run out easy winners over Shels today in Oylgate. 2-11 to 0-08.
Shels having any wind advantage in the first half as it was mostly a cross wind were ahead after 5 mins 0-2 to 0-01 with a pointed free from Conor Byrne and a great point from Stephen Banville. However a Tommy Dwyer ’65 was adjudged to have crossed the line, whilst Shels supporters had applauded a great save by goal man Brian Murphy. The goal held and really from there Shels were on the back boiler. A John Redmond point and another converted free from Conor Byrne together with points from Brian Doyle and Tommy Barron were not enough as Ferns goaled again courtesy of Ian Byrne who collected a fine side-line cut and headed for goal. Shels finished the half 06- to 2-4, 4points behind. On the resumption Simon Donohoe was introduced to bring fresh legs in the Shels side and he immediately made his presence felt and whilst Shels were trying hard, Ferns now with wind advantage could do no wrong. They steadily built on their lead and whilst Conor Walsh and Steven Banville pointed for Shels it was to be our only scores for the entire second half. We did have a penalty after Conor Byrne was fouled running through for an almost certain goal, however the shot taken by the same player was saved. There was an upset then as Brian Doyle was deemed to have fouled a Ferns player late; however two similar tackles on Shels players earlier had went unpunished. Young Eoghan Nolan was introduced and immediately set off hunting for the ball. However, with Shels reduced to 14 men, Shels could make no inroads on the day.
