Shels met Cloughbawn in their 2nd game of the league in Hollymount Sat afternoon.
It was an even first half with Cloughbawn going off into an early lead with 2 pointed frees. Tommy Barron & Stephen Banville pulled the side back level with 2 points in quick succession. Keeper Brian Murphy was called on soon after to make another of his fines saves, one of several in the course of the afternoon. With 20 mins gone Cloughbawn were awarded a third free which the duly converted before Alan Griffith took a point back for the home side. Conor Byrne put Shels in the lead for the first time with a free but Cloughbawn equalled moments later to see both sides level at the break. In the second half both sides swopped scores before Cloughbawn majored 15 mins into the half. Shels stepped up a gear and with the on form Ciaran O’Shaughnessy, Eoin Doyle Stephen Banville and Noel Mythen all working hard meant Shels regained the lead with 5 mins remaining. However Cloughbawn were the stronger over the last 5 minutes and did just enough to pull back a draw, 0-13 to 1-10. Shels can be quite content with this result as they didn’t use any of their U21 panel who had been playing championship V Oulart only 3 hours earlier. A good strong team performance with Denis Kelly, Aidan Murphy, John Redmond & Brian Doyle amongst those to shine.
