Seniors account for St. Martins

Our senior hurlers had a solid victory over St. Martins in Piercestown last night. 0-16 to 0-09.

In bitterly cold conditions and with both sides short a few regulars; Shels were the quicker out of the blocks.  The on form Ciaran O’Shaughnessy with a brace of points, Conor Byrne a free and a point from Tommy Barron saw the Shels take a 4 point lead in the first 10 mins. Martins were awarded a free before a dangerous shot on goal forced Brian Murphy to stretch to the fullest to make a great save. Points were exchanged by both sides to the half time whistle and Shels went into the break leading 06-04. Again Shels got the brighter start with brothers Brian and Eoin Doyle controlling midfield well. Conor Walsh was very strong at centre back also. Shels stretched their lead and with 15 mins gone they had a 7 point advantage 0-12 to -05. St. Martins pointed twice in quick succession but Shels replied with 3 to stretch their lead to 8 points. Again Brian Murphy was called on to make a save. St. Martins tagged on two late points before Shels got the last point of the game to make final score 0-16 to 0-09.
