‘Bomber’ powers Shels to 1st round win

Full forward Conor Byrne powered the Shelmalier Junior footballers to a first round victory over Bunclody by 2-7 to 0-11 played in Ballymurn on Sunday last.

The big full forward scored a total of 2-2 in the first 10 minutes with one of his goals coming from a penalty. The Shels were very sharp in the first quarter when they moved the ball quickly into the full forward line of Liam Donnelly, Conor Byrne and Chris Gordon who made great use of the possession building up a 2-2 to 0-1 score after 10 minutes. Two frees from Colin Redmond and a well taken point from Chris Gordon saw the Shels lead by 2-5 to 0-5 at half time. However, the second half was a different affair with Bunclody coming more into the game and they succeeded in scoring three quick points in the first 10 minutes. Points from Shane Birney and Colin Redmond steadied the ship for the Shelmaliers with Bunclody shooting over three further points, saw a tense and exciting conclusion to the game, with some fine defending from Marc Walsh, Graham Lawler-Ryan, Eoin Fitzgerald, and Seamie Harding saw the Shels winning by two points.
