Shelmalier Senior Football team ended their Championship campaign for 2012 at Quarter Final stage with a 7 point defeat to St Anne’s on Saturday last in Wexford Park ( Score line 3;8 to 1:7 ).
This was a case of ‘What Might Have Been’ for the Shels as they had recovered from the shock of conceding a first minute goal to be only 3 points behind with 7 minutes left in the first half and this having faced a very strong breeze in the opening period. However it was at this stage that St Anne’s showed all their experience by tagging on an additional 1; 2 before the break. The goal was a penalty by Redmond Barry after our defense lost possession near their own goal. In fact Shels man of the match, keeper Graham Lawlor, actually saved the penalty but was beaten on the rebound. More disaster was to hit the Shels early in the new half as once again trying to work the ball out from their own goal, possession was lost, and two passes later, the Rathangan men had their third goal. A massive task now faced the Black and Amber men, 10 points down. However our boys gave it everything they had and in a 20 minute period of total dominance actually had the lead down to 4 points with 7 minutes left. But the huge effort put in to bring the lead down now started to show with St Anne’s adding on scores near the end to run out winners on a score line of 3:8 to 1:7. A great effort by the Shels team but unfortunately not good enough in the end. Best on the day were Graham Lawlor in goal, Fergal Hynes, Tommy Barron, Clive Lawlor and Alan Griffith. Come on the Hurlers next Weekend !!
