The Shelmalier senior footballers who were short of many regulars went down by the narrowest of margins to St. Martins 1-9 to 0-13 in the senior football league match played in Hollymount on Sunday last. This was a game of two half’s with St. Martins dominating the first half and the home team showing great skill and determination in the second half with the outcome of the game only decided in the closing minutes. St. Martins were first off the mark building up a 0-8 to 0-1 lead in the first twenty minutes with Derek Walsh pointing for the Shelmaliers. Further points from AJ Lehane and Craig McCabe saw the home team trailing by 0-3 to 0-10 at half time. What a difference in the Shelmalier team in the second half with Captain Aidan Murphy leading by example when he pointed after two minutes of the restart. Ciaran O Shaughnessy pointed in the sixth minute and the local side knew they had a game in their grasps when Craig McCabe powered in a penalty in the 10th minute. Three further points from sharp shooter Craig McCabe and one from Feargal Hynes saw the team level 1-9 to 0-12 as the game entered additional time. However, St. Martins got the vital point to win by 0-13 to 1-9.
