With an overall fine team performance the Shelmalier Junior B footballers reached the Wexford District final with a clear 0-14 to 0-6 victory over St. Martins played on Sunday last in Pairc Charman.
Both Aidan Clarke and Kevin O Connor were in fine shooting form for the black and amber side. The sides were very even in the first 10 minutes with the score of 0-2 each after that period with Brian O Connor and Aidan Clarke on the mark for the Shels. As the game entered its second quarter the Shels got the upper hand in mid field and half forward line with John Nolan, Graham Staples and Dessie Kehoe put in some determined work. With the full forward line of Barry Redmond, James Shiggins and Brian O Connor now getting plentiful supply of ball saw the Shels extend their lead with points from Aidan Clarke (3), Kevin O Connor and Eoghan Nolan to leave a half time score of 0-7 to 0-5.
St. Martins were much more determined at the start of the second half and they put the Shels defence under some pressure however, Sean Byrne, Barry Murphy, Donal Power, and Gary Murphy in the full back line were outstanding and reduced St. Martins to a single point in the second half despite a lot of procession. As the half went on the Shels restored their faster and more open style of play and with points from Barry Redmond, Aidan Clarke, Kevin O Connor (2) and Adam Whitmore (2) the Shels ran out convincing winners on a score line of 0-14 to 0-6. They now met Sarsfields in the District final.
