Shels got the brighter start with a Tommy Barron point and a free from John Redmond. However Harriers got back into the game with a goal within a minute. Shels majored moments later when a Tommy Barron shot on goal was saved by the Harriers keeper but the waiting Conor Byrne pounced on the sliothar and sent it to the back of the net. John Redmond added another free and it was 1-3 to 1-0 in favour of Shels inside the first ten minutes.
However Shels seemed to lose their way then and the Harriers set about amassing a further 1-8 without reply coming up to half time. A free from Kevin O’Leary ended up in the back of the net and John Redmond added a point but Harriers finished the half strongly adding 1-1 in injury time. Half time score 3-9 to 2-4 in favour of Harriers. The second half seen the introduction of Chris Gordon, Ibar Murphy and Seamie Harding and this had an immediate impact on the game. Harriers pointed but Shels added 4 minors courtesy of John Redmond, Ibar Murphy, Bryan Tobin and Tommy Barron. Shels were starting to get on top and whilst Harriers scooped 2 points Shels came back and added 1-2 (goal from Conor Byrne) heading for the final whistle. Mick Kelly got the sought after goal just on full time to force the draw, however a free in injury time was awarded and the Harriers man made no mistake and accurately dispatched it over the bar. Moments later James Flood sounded the final whistle to leave Harriers the victors in this replay by the smallest of margins. 3-14 to 4-10.
This was a most entertaining game and really either side deserved the victory. Shels were strong in all areas and when they got going stood up well to the Harriers. We were best served by Noel Mythen, who was staunch at full back, Bryan Tobin and John Redmond were powerful at midfield. James Gordon on the long road back from injury has lost none of his talent. Willie Redmond whose injuries from our last meeting with the Harriers caused the game to be abandoned was as strong as ever in the goal. Tommy Barron newly returned from Australia showed that he is as accurate and effective as ever and Mick Kelly who was involved in two goals worked hard through out.
