Shels V Buffers Alley report

Our senior hurlers having led Buffers Alley well from the 2nd to the 61st minute conceded 2-1 in injury time to lose on a scoreline 3-5 to 0-12.

Shels met Buffers Alley in the 2nd round of the championship in Bellefield on Sunday evening last at 7.30 PM.

Conditions were very windy and Shels having won the toss, Capt. Eoin Doyle elected to play with the wind. Shels were first on the board with a Stephen Banville point within the first 2 minutes. Brian Doyle had a great run up the field and sent a pass to the in running Joe Kelly who was unlucky not to goal with his effort. Shels settled into the game and methodically set about building up a good lead. Points from Aidan Cash, Joe Kelly and Conor Byrne 2F, meant Shels had 05- to nil lead for the first quarter. Buffers Alley then got what was to be their only point of the half with a free in the 15th minute. Shels immediately replied with a point from Alan Griffith and 3 well taken free’s from Conor Byrne. In the final stages of the half Benny Barron who was having a strong game had a good clearance to keep Shels safe and Ciaran O’Shaughnessy who was everywhere, tapped over Shels 10th point of the half just before the whistle. Half time score Shels  0-10 to 0-1 Buffers Alley.

On the resumption with the wind as strong as ever, Shels were caught out for a very quick goal inside the first minute from Keith Burke who had managed to get himself free for a matter of seconds. Shels regrouped and Buffers Alley had attack after attack foiled, Feargal Hynes had 2 great clearances and Brian (Turf) Murphy denied the Alley twice in quick succession. Buffers Alley still trickled away with their points. Shels were working hard and seemed to have most of the possession but those elusive scores weren’t coming.  The half was 21 minutes old before Joe Kelly got on the board for Shels. Stephen Banville added a point and at the end of ordinary time Shels were leading (as they had been from the 2nd minute) 0-12 to 1-4. Disaster struck then and a rare lapse in what had been a staunch defence for the day let the experienced Buffers Alley team in for 2-1 in the last 3 minutes in injury time to leave Shels hearts broken with a final score of 0-12 to 3-5, in favour of Buffers Alley.

Great heart must be taken by the way in which the entire team performed and amongst those to shine were, Eoin Doyle, Brian Doyle, Brian Malone, Conor Walsh and Ciaran O’Shaughnessy.

We wish Eoin Doyle a speedy recovery from injuries sustained in the game.
