Minors draw with St. Martins

Shelmalier minor footballers opened their championship account with a 0-7 to 1-4 draw with St Martin’s with the game played in Hollymount on Sunday last.

The Shelmalier boys got into the game from the start with some fine flowing football distributing the ball from backs to forwards. Captain Neal Rossiter lead by example when pointing after 11 minutes and the same player extended the Shelmalier lead with a second point in the 14th minute. The Shels were not having it all their own way with St Martin’s guilty of a number of wides in the first quarter. The Shelmalier half back line of Eoghan Nolan, Eoghan Fitzgerald and Conor Forde ably assisted at mid field by James Cash and Graham Staples succeeded in disrupting many St Martin’s attacks. With further first half points from Stephen McGuire, Graham Staples and Neal Rossiter the black and amber men lead by 0-5 to 0-2 at half time.  The second half saw both teams exchange early points with Neal Rossiter getting the Shelmalier score. With the Shelmalier dominating mid field the full forward line of Aaron Ryan, Tony Smyth and John Forde got a number of opportunities to extend the lead. However, St. Martins can with a late surge with the Shelmalier full back line of Glen Malone, Simon Donohoe, Eoin O Leary and goalie Sean Byrne stopping a number of scoring opportunities. St Martin’s did succeed in drawing level in the last five minutes with unanswered a goal and a point.
