The Shelmalier minor football team had a hard fought 1-8 to 0-8 victory over Gusserane in the quarter final of the competition played in Gusserane on Sunday week, they now meet near neighbours Crossabeg/Ballymurn in the semi final possible on Sunday next, check local press for details. Gusserane were first off the mark with a point after 5 minutes, but the Shelmaliers took control with the half back line of Simon Donohoe, Eoghan Fitzgerald and Eoghan Nolan stopping many Gusserane attacks. Any attack that did pass this half back line was collected by the full back line of Glen Malone, Neil Rossiter, Eoin O Leary and gaolie Sean Byrne. With the mid field pairing of James Cash and Graham Staples now pushing forward the Shelmalier scored three quick points from Tony Smyth, Stephen McGuire, Neil Rossiter. Gusserane replied with a point of their own, but they couldn’t control the rampant Shels boys with some great fielding from corner forwards John Forde and Colin Cleary. The half concluded with further points from Graham Staples (2) and Stephen McGuire to leave a half score of 0-6 to 0-3 in favour of the visitors. Gusserane can out in the second half with all guns blazing and scored three points in quick succession to lever the scores. Gusserane were then awarded a penalty which they failed to convert and immediately afterwards the Shels had a goal of their own disallowed for a questionable square ball. With the game now finally balanced, the Shels boys showed the true spirit of this team when they took complete control of the game with Adam Whitmore and Conor Forde very active in the forward line. With Neil Rossiter now operation in the forward line he took two great points with some great interplay for his fellow forwards. The game was finished as a contest when corner forward Colin Cleary whose previous goal was disallowed made no mistake this time with a great punched goal from 5 yards. This insured victory for the black and amber boys on a score line of 1-8 to 0-8.
