Shels overcome Sarsfields in Jim Byrne

Shelmalier minor footballers opened their campaign in the Jim Byrne Cup with a 1-10 to 1-5 victory over the Sarsfields played in Hollymount on Sunday last.

In very cold and windy conditions the black and amber boys were first off the mark with two points from full forward Tony Smith, however, the Sarsfields soon replied with a goal after 10 minutes. The Shels then took control of the game with Graham Staples and James Cash dominating midfield and clever movement in the forwards from Neal Rossiter, Mark Mythen, Colin Cleary Conor Forde and Stephen McGuire resulting in points for Neal Rossiter(3), Colin Cleary and Mark Mythen, to leave a half time lead of 0-7 to 1-1. Simon Donohoe drove forward from centre back to score a great goal after the resumption and the same player combined with Tony Smith to leave the Shels winner by 1-10 to 1-5. The Sarsfields did have a period of dominance in the middle of the second half but sound goalkeeping from Sean Byrne and defending from Eoghan Nolan, Eoin O Leary, Evan Deveraux, Kevin Byrne, Eoghan Fitzgerald ensured the home team won out in the end.
