Our U21 Footballers, missing several pivotal players lost to St. Martins last night 1-13 to 0-9 and are now out of the championship.
Our U21 footballers were knocked out of the championship at the first round stage by St. Martins on Tuesday last in Piercestown. Fielding a very young team due to a number of injuries we were first off the mark in the opening minutes when Brian ‘turf’ Murphy curled over a great point from 45m out. However a very strong and fit St. Martins team took control of the game and hit seven points without reply to lead by 0-7 to 0-1 after 20 minutes. Joe Kelly and Craig McCabe scored 2 in a row in the 25 and 26th minute to cut the deficit but St. Martins scored the final point of the half to leave the half time score 0-8 to 0-3 in favour of St. Martins.
If the Shels were to have any chance in this game they really needed to start the second half strongly but St. Martins took up where they left off and hit 2 points without reply to stretch their lead. P O’Leary got 1 back for the Shels but St. Martin’s kicked 3 more points and then hit the net to leave them 12 points ahead mid way through the second half. The Shels made some positional changes with Aiden Cash moving to centre back and AJ Lehane to midfield and they both started to have a major influence on the game. The Shels threw caution to the wind and attacked at will and really started to put St. Martins on the back foot. We went on to score 5 unanswered points to pull us back into the game but unfortunately it was too little to late and when the ref blew the final whistle we were still trailing by 1-13 to 0-9.
