Seniors beat St. Annes in Relegation game

Our senior hurlers, playing with heart & determination fought off a strong challenge to beat St. Annes 2-10 to 0-12. Two goals from Chris McGrath helping seal victory.

Shels met St. Annes in the opening game of the relegation contest, in Piercestown last Saturday evening. With both teams needing to win, it made for an entertaining and strongly contested match.  Joe Kelly opened Shels account with a free with Anne’s equalising soon after. Chris McGrath was then put through for Shels first major of the after good work by midfielder Ciaran O’Shaughnessy. Goalie Brian (Turf) Murphy than had a great clearance off the line, to preserve Shels lead. Ciaran O’Shaughnessy pointed before Anne’s working hard added a brace of points to their tally. 1-2 to 0-3. Joe Kelly converted another free before Annes pointed to keep two between the sides. A superb Benny Barron pass to the waiting Stephen Banville resulted in a great score before Stephen added another moments later. Half time score 1-5 to 0-4. On the resumption Anne’s converted two free’s before Shels replied with a Benny Barron free and a Joe Kelly point. There were now four between the sides. Shels then put great distance between the sides when Ciaran O’Shaughnessy broke down a ball and quickly passed to the inform Aidan Cash, who sent in down to Noel Mythen who expertly caught and let if off to the in running Chris (Hopper) McGrath for his second major of the day. However Anne’s were not finished and replied with three unanswered points (2F). There was four back between the sides. Play was stopped for awhile after Aidan Cash was winded. Shels tagged on three more points, Chris McGrath, Joe Kelly (F) & Benny Barron (F), whilst Annes managed to keep in touch with two points. Annes were throwing everything at Shels and we were deep into injury time. Brian Malone had a great clearance to deny Diarmuid O’Keefe a goal opportunity but St. Annes managed a late point in the 36th minute.  When the ref blew the whistle after more than 37 minutes, Shels were clear winners by 4 points. 2-10 to 0-12. Best on the day when the entire team played extremely well were, Chris McGrath, Benny Barron, Ciaran O’Shaughnessy, Brian Malone and Conor Walsh.
