On a very dark and dreary evening, open hurling was out off the question and that was reflected on the scoreboard in what was a very low scoring game. Our lads started the game well and went into an early lead courtesy of a point from a Conor Hearne free and a goal from Dan Campbell. Oilgate hit back with a couple of points but that was their only scores of the half. Another pointed free from Conor Hearne followed by an opportunist goal from Jody Donohoe left the half time score Shels 2.02 Oilgate 0.02. Playing into a strong wind in the second half the Shels lads hurled really well especially the backs. A point from a free from Conor Hearne and one from play by Jody Donohoe were the Shels only scores of the half but it was enough as they held the Oilgate forwards to only one point to leave the final scoreline Shels 2.04 Oilgate 0.03. Best on the night were Stephen Rossiter, Cian Manley and Sean Keane in the backs and Craig Parker, Jody Donohoe and Enda Cloake in the forwards. Next game is next Thursday evening away to R/Cushinstown in under 14 Hurling.
The Shels under 14 hurlers got their championship campaign off to a winning start against Oilgate in Hollymount this evening.
