Shels opened their Senior Football championship campaign on Friday 6th May when they were comprehensively beaten by St Annes in Wexford Park.
St Annes were very dominant all over the field in the first 15 minutes and raced into a 2-5 to 0-1 lead. Shels were in trouble until Stephen Banville took control around the centre of the field and changed the game allowing the Shels to score six points before half time (2-6 to 0-6)
In the second half Stephen Banville and Terry Gainfort (free) narrowed the gap to 4 points and a Shels recovery looked on the cards. But Red Barry dragged St Annes back into the game with a point and again St Annes took over. Substitute Liam Donnelly scored a late goal to improve the appearance, but really the Annes were dominant for the last 15 minutes and ran out easy winners 2-12 to 1-9.
