Ibars win Feile Sheils

St.Ibars/Shelmaliers u14 team won the Slaney Festival Shield competition in Duffry Rovers pitch held on Monday, 2nd May.  St.Ibars were in a group with Rapparees, Bunclody, Bannow/Ballymitty.   

Their first game was at 10.30am and the girls were drawn against the Rapparees, this was a tight encounter.  A brilliant free by Niamh Walsh saw the ball go straight to the back of the net in the first half.  On the turnaround the Rapps put alot of pressure on however the Ibars held out for a 1-0 to 0-1 victory. 

In the second game the girls played Bunclody, where they ran out easy victors on a scoreline 4-2 to 0-0.  Scores Jessica Sinnott 1-1; Roisin Doolan 1-0; Larah Campbell 1-0; Niamh Walsh 0-1; Michaela Lanigan 1-0.  

In the final game of the group the girls played Bannow/Ballymitty with both teams on even points leading into the match – a victory by either meant a place in the final.   This was moved to the main pitch, & the Ibars won the toss and decided to play with the strong breeze going up the hill in the first half, the Ibars put alot of pressure on but found scores hard to come by in the opening five minutes but Leanne Corrigan started the scores rolling with a superb goal from 40 metres, this saw the Ibars taking control with 3 points – 2 from Niamh Walsh and 1 from Larah Campbell to end the half 1-3 to 0-0.  In the second half facing the wind, the Ibars showed great spirit scoring a point and holding Bannow/Ballymitty with great saves by Megan Murphy and brilliant defensive play from the backs.  

In the final the girls faced the host team – Duffry Rovers.  The girls again played with the strong wind in their backs in the opening half and lead  2-2 to 0-0 at the break.  In the second half the girls battled hard for a well earned victory of 3-3 to 1-1  Scorers: Niamh Walsh 1-2; Jessica Sinnott 2-1.

The girls were convincing winners of the competition only having conceded 1-2 for the entire day

U14 League Update

St.Ibars/Shelmaliers played Bannon/Ballymitty in the second round of the u14 league competition on Wednesday 27th April, in Grantstown. On this sunny evening the girls played a tough Bannow side. The first half was closely fought and ended level 1-2 a piece.  It was thought that this game would go to the wire, however in the second half the over the water girls upped the tempo and quickly got scores on the board through Niamh, Shauna and Jessie.  Bannow fought hard towards the end, however the Ibars backs were very strong and held Bannow out and ran out comfortable victors in the end on a scoreline 4-9 to 2-4.
