Great Display by third team

Shelmaliers third hurling team opened their championship with an entertaining and challenging match against near neighbours Crossabeg Ballymurn played in Ballymurn on Monday evening last.

The Shelmaliers opened very well with Brian O Shaughnessy and Stephen Whelan controlling mid field with great support from their half back line of Shane O Connor, James Murphy and Graham Lawlor. Willie Redmond got the Shels first point which was followed by a goal from Philip Walsh. Ballymurn soon replied taking an early lead with two quick goals and a number of points. The Shels put in a storming finish to the first half with a Pádraic Coen goal and another Willie Redmond point. Ballymurn came out the stronger in the second half but were held by the full back line of Barry O Connor, Colm Hearne, Jonathon Breslin and ace goal keeper Ciaran Murphy. In a low scoring second half the Shels scorers were Willie Redmond, James Shiggins and Craig Potter, with Ballymurn running out winner by 3-10 to 2-5. As this was the first championship match for many of these players, it was a satisfactory performance which will improve with plenty of practicing and training in Hollymount. Therefore, we hope to see you all at the next hurling training. Many thanks to manager Ibar hurler Murphy who managed to put this team together at short notice. Next match is against St Annes on Friday week 13th May in Hollymount at 7pm.
