Our senior hurlers had a solid 9 point victory over near neighbours Blackwater in the hurling league this afternoon in Hollymount.
Shels got off to the worst possible start when Sean Purcell goaled for the visitors inside the first minute of play. Shels didn’t rattle though and Brian Doyle with a brace of points closed the gap very quickly. The two teams exchanged points then with Benny Barron scoring 2 frees and Joe Kelly pointing after great work from Chris McGrath. James Gordon and Stephen Banville pointed before Chris McGrath found the back of the net to put some daylight between the sides. Stephen Banville added a point on half time to leave the score 1-8 to 1-5. Joe Kelly and Benny Barron scored two frees on the resumption and Ciaran O’Shaughnessy and Conor Walsh added points to the tally. Blackwater were fighting hard to stay in contention but Shels were steadily building a solid lead. The hard working Brian Doyle continued to make inroads into the Blackwater defence. Blackwater had a good chance to get back into the game with a goal shot 8 minutes from the end but the ever reliable Brian (Turf) Murphy dealt with the danger with a superb save. Further insurance points from Joe Kelly, Brian Doyle and Ciaran O’Shaughnessy left the final score 1-17 to 1-9.
Another solid team performance with our defence solid, midfield very effective and our forwards taking their chances.
