Shels off to great start

Shels junior team met Wexford town side St. Joseph’s in their opening league game.

A fortuitous goal for the visitors in the first minute of play saw them race into an early lead. However the visitor’s lack of discipline in the first 10 minutes seen Conor Byrne convert 3 frees plus a point scored from play, for Shels to come back into the lead. Feargal Hynes added a free before Josephs replied with 1-2. Chris Gordon replied with a point, before James Murphy, working hard, collected a fine ball and combined with Ronan Kavanagh and Conor Byrne to put Chris Gordon through for a well take goal on the cusp of half time, meaning Shels went into the break a point up.
In the second half, Shels now assisted by the wind hit 1-12 without reply. Points from Conor Byrne, Cormac Smyth, Brian Kirwan, Chris Gordon, Feargal Hynes, Seamie Harding and Brian (Turf) Murphy before Chris Gordon got his second major of the day. St. Joseph’s got their sole score of the second half just on full time leaving final score 2-18 to 2-3.

An excellent all round team performance, where the entire team played to a very high standard.

A personal tally of 2-3 for Chris Gordon with Conor Byrne 05, 4F Feargal Hynes 0-3F accurate on frees together with a powerful performance from Niall Stafford.
