Shels win minor hurling

jg&acOur minor hurlers contested the Premier Division Co. final Sunday last in Wexford Park against Rathnure and won out on a scoreline 5-14 to 2-13.

Goals coming from Shane Birney, Brian Murphy (2), Johnny Campbell and Stephen Corrigan. Feargal Hynes was in fine form on the free’s (5) and Captain James Gordon led by example. Craig McCabe was superb in goal, the defence was outstanding, a strong all round team performance. Well done to manager Austin Hearne, selectors Paddy Harding and Paddy Campbell. Shelmaliers were first off the scoreboard when Feargal Hynes converted a free in the first 2 minutes. Shane Birney added a superb goal 2 minutes later and Feargal Hynes added another point before Rathnure got on the score board. Rathnure converted 3 free’s in a row and were working hard to get back into the game. Shels captain James Gordon then pointed whilst shortly after goalie Craig McCabe saved Shels twice in a few seconds. The speedy Stephen Corrigan having made several impressive runs saw his efforts rewarded with a point and when the same player was fouled soon after, Brian (Turf) Murphy blasted the resulting 21 yard free to the back of the net. Further points from James Gordon (after an excellent interception by Neal Rossiter) and Brian Murphy before corner back Shane Griffith went on a run up the field and with exchanges with Niall Tobin pointed. Shels were now in full flow and were playing in a confident and assured manner.  Rathnure at this stage got back into the game with a goal and a point but Shels piled on the pressure to the half time whistle with scores from Stephen Corrigan and Feargal Hynes (0-2F). Half time score 2-10 to 1-5.

On the resumption Brian Murphy pointed in the first minute as did Rathnure. But then followed a dream passage for Shels, with goals from Johnny Campbell (after a good pass by Niall Tobin) and Brian Murphy and a point from James Gordon. Rathnure added three points before the outstanding Stephen Corrigan majored to put the game out of harms way. However Rathnure were not finished and Shels defence withstood fierce pressure as the opposition scored 1-3 without reply in the last ten minutes. Feargal Hynes and Johnny Campbell added 2 steadying scores and unlike the previous week the game finished a respectable 2 minutes into injury time to leave the final score 5-14 to 2-13. This was a strong all round team performance and no one was found wanting on the day.  Deserved captain, James Gordon accepted the cup from his mother Molly Gordon on behalf of the team. Well done to all concerned.
