A goal in the 35 minute of the 2nd half by the opposiotion meant Shels drew with Ballinastragh Gaels in minor Co. football final. 1-8 to 2-5. Read on for report.
Shelmalier Minor Football team had victory snatched from their grasp in cruel fashion on Sunday last when a 6th minute of injury time goal brought Ballinastragh Gaels back level and force a reply in the County final in Wexford Park. Our boys started really brightly and after six minutes had 1:1on the board thanks mainly to a real opportunist goal from AJ Lehane. However for the rest of the half the Shels boys were mainly on the back foot and only thanks to some superb defensive work meant that they only went in at half time 1 point down on a score line of 1:1 to 5pts. The second half began better for the Shels and at last we started to see some of the free flowing football that this team is capable of playing. Gradually the scores started to flow and with twelve minutes gone we were two points up. Then disaster struck as the Gaels with their first movement into our half finished a good passing move by firing to the net. Now serious questions were being asked of our boys and not for the fist time this year they had the answers and through some really determined play had gone into a commanding three point lead and with the referee calling for 3 ½ minutes of injury time, our first minor football title since 2004 looked secure. However in the 6th minute (5 mins 26 sec) of added on time a free flowing movement saw Ballinastraw score an equalizing goal. The referee immediately blew the final whistle and victory was snatched from our grasp. It was a cruel end but at least we live to fight another day. This team has not been found wanting all year when serious questions have been asked of them and there is no doubt that they will have the answers again when the replay takes place in Patrick’s Park on the 16th of October.
