Shelmalier Minor football team finished their Championship group stages unbeaten with a very exciting victory over Starlights in Hollymount on Tuesday last on a scoreline of 12pts to 10pts. Just how close this group was and how hard it’s going to be to win this championship is shown by the fact that the Shels lads won four of their group games by 2pts or less. It also shows that this team is made of “strong stuff” and this was evident again in their latest narrow victory. The home team started very brightly and led by three points after 12 minutes thanks to points from James Gordon, Craig Mc Cabe and Stephen Corrigan. However the Enniscorthy boys then came on strong and led by 6pts to 5 just on half time before a brilliant passing move ended with a score to level it 6pts all at the break. The second half started as the first had with the Shels on top. However their good approach work didn’t lead to scores and it was the visitors who then started to run the show. Great scores by Brendan Kearney and Richie Farrell left the home team trailing by 3 pts with only 11 minutes left and at this stage our unbeaten record looked very shaky. But it was at this stage that this team showed what they are really made of and reeled off 5 unanswered points, with Mc Cabe, Gordon and Niall Tobin among the scorers, in a storming finish to end up winners by 12pts to 10pts. A great game, a great performance and a great win. Well done to all concerned
