Shelmaliers played the game of their lives to beat the Black & Amber Gaels, (Askamore, Ballygarret, and Kilrush) in Ballyroebuck Monday last on a scoreline 1-20 to 2-14
After a long trip up to Ballyroebuck, Shels got off to a slow start in which the Black and Amber Gaels got a lucky goal from a long range free in the first ten minutes. Indeed the goal proved to be the main difference between the teams for most of the game. The Shels had a lot of missed chances in the first half, and they went into the break four points down.
In the second half after the shels regrouped and played with more confidence, the scores seemed to come more freely with fine points from a lot of the players.
Coming to the last ten minutes the shels got an important, well taken goal from Shane Griffith which put them in the driving seat. Shels then had a good passage of play and this left them 6 points up with five minutes to go. The Black and Amber got a late goal from a 21 yard free deep into injury time but it was too little too late. Final score 1-20 to 2-14. The shels were well served well by Brian Murphy, Conor Byrne, Noel Mythen, Eoin Doyle (C) Benny Barron, Brian Tobin, Joe Kelly and Shane Griffith. Shels meet the Rapparee’s in the next round, which should be another mouth watering encounter.
