Minors win Titanic Battle

In one of the best minor football matches seen in Hollymount for a long number of years our Shels boys again showed great character in defeating a very strong Ballinastraw Gaels (Kilanerin/Tara Rocks) on a scoreline of 1:10 to 1:8.

There was only one team running the show for the opening ten minutes as the visitors raced into a 1:2 to no score lead. However the Shels then started to come into the game and by half time the deficit was down to two points, 1:4 to 5pts thanks mainly to good scores by Fergal Hynes and James Gordon. The opening ten minutes of the new half was all Shels as our boys played some great football, capped off by a Jack Murphy close range finish for a goal. Expert free taking by Craig Mc Cabe helped the home boys into a 5 point lead but from there to the finish the Kilanerin/Tara Rocks combination got some great scores and cut the lead back to a point. However in an exciting finale to the game the Shels boys came good and eventually held out for a 1:10 to 1:8 victory. Great credit is due to both teams for a very exciting and enjoyable game. Best for Shels on the night were AJ Lehane, Stephen Corrigan and Conor Tobin in defence while James Gordon, Fergal Hynes and Adam Whitmore were impressive up front. Well done to all.
