The Shelmalier Club was well represented on the very successful County Under 17 football team which competed in the All Ireland Blitz competition held at the very impressive facilities of the Louth GAA Board in Darver on Saturday last (24th July).
Five players, Aj Lehane, Craig Mc Cabe, Glen Murphy, Shane Birney and Paraic O Leary played on the Wexford team who won all their three games and now go on to meet Cavan in the All Ireland Semi-Final. Their achievement is all the greater when you consider that they beat three Northern counties, Antrim, Down and Armagh on the day. In the opening game a late Craig Mc Cabe goal was enough to beat Antrim by a point in a very physical and hard hitting game. Next up was Down, where again Wexford got through by a single point in a very exciting game. Their last victory was probably the sweetest of all as they trailed Armagh all through until the final five minutes when they came on strong to hold out for a two point win. Shane was first choice goalkeeper on the day, Aj was left half back and probably the Wexford’s best player on the day, Craig and Glen played at centre and full forward at different stages and Paraic was centre back all through and the only Wexford player on the entire squad to play every minute of every game and was outstanding at number six. Well done to all the lads and the signs are very good for the strength of the Wexford Minor Football team in 2011. For full size pic go to photos- 2010- football.
