Shels good win over Clongeen

Senior Football Championship – 1st Round

Shels Senior Footballers gave a very good account of themselves when they overcame Clongeen in the first round of the Senior Championship.

A close tough contest was expected but Shels quickly pulled away with points from Garret Dunne, Stephen Banville and a goal from a penalty by Derek Walsh. Clongeen replied with a point by Padraig Stafford after 14 minutes and 0-3 from frees by Paddy Colfer. But Shels continued to power through the first half and ended the half with a 2-8 to 0-4 advantage.

In the second half, Clongeen upped their game considerably and made a more even contest of it. Stephen Banville pointed after 10 minutes with Paddy Colfer replying for Clongeen. Paddy Colfer then slotted home 2 penalties and in between Colin Redmond scored a goal after great work by Stephen Banville. Colin and Paddy were very accurate from frees, but Clongeen failed to eat considerably into the Shels lead and it ended with a final score of  Shels 3-12, Clongeen 2-7.

There was a double bonus for winning this game as the winners were to receive the league points too. Although the Shels have one game left in the league against Horeswood, they have now qualified for the Premier league semi-final.
