Senior Football League – 2nd round. This game was played in Rathangan on Saturday evening – it was certainly a game of two halves!
Both teams were missing some players but the game was well contested throughout. For the first 10 minutes the teams were well matched. St Annes had David ‘Doc’ O’Connor at midfield and David Fogarty at full forward. They utilised the long ball to good effect, but gradually the Shels started to win the mid-field battle and pulled away to be ahead by 0-9 to 0-3 by half time: 0-1 from frees for Shels and 0-2 from frees for St Annes.
In the second half, St Annes had the slight hill advantage. David Fogarty was now operating at mid-field and along with the ‘Doc,’ they were gradually controlling the game. Shels were attacking less and defending more. As a result, St Annes scored 0-7 to 0-2 for the Shels and it was all to play for with only 5 minutes remaining and one point between the teams. However, Shels dug deep and scored the two last points through Mark Tobin and Derek Walsh to leave the final score at 0-13 Shels, 0-11 St Annes.
That’s two wins out of two – a good start to the year!
