Families of the 1910 Men Reunion

1910An attendance of almost 500 people attended the Shelmalier GAA Clubs ‘Families of the 1910 Men’ function in Hotel Curracloe on Saturday night last.

The function a part of  the clubs extensive programme of events throughout the year to commemorate and celebrate Castlebridge’s famous victory in the 1910 All Ireland Hurling Final, Wexford’s very first All Ireland victory. Welcoming the guest and friends who had travelled from near and far Shelmalier club Chairman Seamus O Leary said that it was very important that we should always remember the past achievements as it gives us all a sense of identity and belonging. He said uniting the words Club Family and Community easily explained what this function was about and what the GAA in general was all about. He praised the work of the past club members and supporters who commemorated this and other events on an annual basis since 1910. He finally welcomed all the Bold Shelmaliers back to their roots in the Over the Water area. County GAA Chairman Ger Doyle while remembering the past highlighted the tremendous work taking place in the Shelmalier both on and off the field of play and he said the future looked very good for the next generation of Bold Shelmaliers. Club President Fr. Walter Forde stated the relevance of the GAA club in peoples lives both today and in 1910. Historian Nicky Furlong remembered many of the players of the 1910 team and highlighted their great dedication and commitment to ensuring defeats in past years were put aside in order to win Wexford’s greatest victory on the field of play. Mr. Pat Doyle son of the winning captain replied on behalf of all the families present praised the club for their efforts in organising such a function as it meant a great deal to all the families involved. He highlighted the great work been done in Hollymount on a daily basis by a large group of dedicated members and supporters. Specially commissioned 1910 plaques and scrolls were presented to a member of each played involved by the club Chairman and club President to mark the occasion. The night concluded with music and refreshments and many old friendships renewed and many old matches relived.
