County Camogie team Begin league on Sunday

Camogie begin League on Sunday

The Wexford girls have put the crushing disappointment of last season behind them as they prepare for the league against Dublin this Sunday in the opening round of the Division One National Camogie League. Wexford will be hosting Dublin in Monamolin at 2 p.m. Best of luck to Kate Kelly who has been named on the panel for Sunday.

“Wexford won the league last year but were defeated by Cork in the All-Ireland semi final last August in Nowlan Park.  They were leading at half-time but failed to perform in the second half and Cork ran out winners by around five points.

Former Wexford hurler JJ Doyle takes charge of the side following the departure of 2007 All-Ireland winning manager Stellah Sinnott.  Having only lost two stalwarts from the Senior panel, namely Rose-Marie Breen and Michelle Hearne, J.J. Doyle and his selectors have a full panel to choose from with no injury worries.  The team has been training hard since early January under the watchful eye of Gerry McQuaid.  Una Leacy has been appointed captain, with Áine Codd as vice-captain.

THE WEXFORD Intermediate camogie team will be playing Down on Saturday next at a half-way venue to be announced in the Division 2 League

Meanwhile, last year’s All-Ireland finalists Kilkenny face Tipperary on Sunday and manager Ann Downey will hope that the recent Ashbourne and Purcell finals and a raft of post-primary fixtures will not adversely affect her team’s opening performance. Jill Horan captains the Tipperary side for the year and they will be anxious to record an early season victory over their close rivals while Galway take on Clare in the remaining Division one fixture.

In a busy weekend for camogie, Division Two action sees Wexford and Galway intermediate sides play Down and Waterford respectively; Tipperary play Kilkenny while Cork take on Antrim. Joachim Kelly’s Offaly will hope to record another league victory over northern rivals Derry.  In Division Three, Laois will aim to extend their winning run against Kildare; Roscommon face Meath and Armagh play Dublin. Division Four side Westmeath make the journey to London while Tyrone entertain Carlow in Brocagh.
