Despite having a 6 point lead going into the break, Shels lost to Our Lady’s Island in Taghmon this afternoon on a scoreline 1-19 to 1-16.
Shels, playing with the wind, went three points down before Ciaran Walsh pointed in the fourth minute, further points from Aidan Cash, Ibar Murphy and Vinny Parker kept the side level in the first quarter. James Murphy was sending in a good supply of ball to the forwards in this period. Accurate free taking by John Redmond pushed the shels ahead and with Brian Tobin and Ronan Kavanagh in fine scoring form saw the Shels forge a good lead before Vinny Parker and Ronan Kavanagh combined to put Ibar Murphy through for goal. Shels went into the break 1-12 to 0-9 ahead.
On the resumption, Our Lady’s Island started the stronger and aided by the strong breeze quickly started to eat into the Shels lead. Points from Ciaran Walsh and Aidan Cash and Fergie Parker (2 free’s), wasn’t enough to halt the islanders comeback. The physically stronger side outplayed the Shels and their danger man Liam Kinsella was dominant for the second half. Final score 1-19 to 1-16. Best for Shels on the day was Ciaran Walsh, Garrett Dunne, John (Foxy) Redmond, Fergie Parker and Brian Tobin. Shels will now have to play a relegation semi final which will be in approximately three week’s time. All in all it was a pity to lose this game, but as we met Our Lady’s Island first team to our second team, management won’t be too disheartened and the team will have another day on the field.
