U16 Hurling Championship V Fethard 15 August 09. Venue: Hollymount.

This was our last group game, and although we were already out of the reckoning in this year’s championship, all concerned with this panel were keen to go out on a high note, and to hurl to a good standard.
Playing against the wind, we struggled to find our rhythm. In particular our forwards were finding it difficult to make an impact against the strong and physical Fethard backs.  Fethard grabbed a few early scores to put our boys under pressure and the first quarter was very difficult all over the field. However we settled into the game as the half wore on and started to score a few points. The fact that Fethard had found the net three times in the first half meant that we were always on the back foot.
Although we turned around 3-8 to 0-4 down, we knew we had the wind at our backs, and we started the second half with great determination. Unfortunately we were never able to whittle down the Fethard lead, although we broke even with them over the course of the second half. The game featured a number of very good performances from our boys – Páraic O’ Leary was outstanding throughout, closely followed by Captain Dean Corrigan in midfield. Glen Murphy and Conor Tobin put in solid performances and worked very hard. As in all our other games Sean Byrne was brave, hardworking and skilful. Adam Whitmore, although under pressure, put in a fine performance.
The management of the team would like to thank all the lads for their year’s work – they are a great group, and we would encourage all of them to continue to work on their game, in preparation for next year’s campaign.
