U16 Footballers bow out

juvjuvjuvOur juvenile footballers bowed out of the championship last week with a defeat away to Fethard.

Played in absolutely awful conditions the physically bigger and stronger home team won out on a score line of 1:7 to 6pts. Our boys played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and controlled the game. However due to some inaccurate shooting and the fatal miss of a penalty we only led by 2pts at half time. Now facing the elements of strong wind and driving rain our task was always going to be difficult but with Paraic O Leary playing the covering defender role to great effect our boys continued to be on top. But as in the first half we just didn’t take the chances that our good approach play deserved. The vital score of the game came with just ten minutes to go when a swift counter attack by the home team led to Gareth Foley firing to the net to put the home team in front for the first time. Despite this set back our boys fought back well to try to save the game and after good play by Craig McCabe and Glen Murphy (Captain) the ball fell to Neil Rossiter whose left foot shot was brilliantly saved by the home keeper. This proved to be our last chance and a late home point from a free sealed our fate. This group of lads can consider themselves very unlucky not to qualify for the Semi-Final as they finished on the same points as two of the other semi finalist but lost out on the results of a previous game. Well done lads:
