Seniors qualify for Quarter Finals

pmcdwdmjkShelmaliers Senior Footballers had a convincing win over Fethard in New Ross on Saturday evening to progress to the next round of the Co. Championship

Shels raced into an early lead with points by Brian Doyle, Stephen Banville, a Goal by Joe Kelly and points by Colin Redmond (free), Stephen Banville and Garret Dunne to leave it 1-5 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. Shels were cruising, but a lack of concentration let Fethard in for a shot on goal. A great save by Paudie Mc Mahon dropped kindly for 17 year old Kevin Rowe and the Fethard corner forward (nephew of John Banville!) made no mistake as he slotted it soccer-style to the net. The experienced Jim Byrne quickly added a point and suddenly it was 1-5 to 1-1. Derek Walsh replied with a point and then set up Stephen Banville with a great goal chance. However, William Doyle pulled off a great save. Again Derek scored a point although he didn’t spot James Gordon unmarked on the edge of the square. These missed goal chances left Fethard well in the game and they started to control a lot of play around mid-field. Two points by Jim Byrne (0-1 free) and a good point by wing back Mark Wallace was proof of their dominance. However, Shels finished the half well by controlling mid-field and scoring two good points by Colin Redmond and Tommy Barron, who had advanced well from wing back. Half time score Shels 1-9, Fethard 1-4.
In the second half Shels again started well. A pointed free by Derek Walsh was cancelled by a Jim Byrne free after good work by Kevin Rowe. However, two good points by Brian Doyle and Stephen Banville and a pointed free by Colin Redmond pushed the Shels ahead. Shels were on top at mid-field but gradually Fethard got back into the game. They continually supplied quality ball into Kevin Rowe who was a constant threat for Shels. He won a free which Jim Byrne pointed and then scored two more excellent goals – his third while being marked by three men! These goals kept Fethard in the game and were an indication of the pressure they were exerting on the Shels. However the Shels drove on from here with points from Garret Dunne, C. Redmond (free), Joe Kelly and two from Derek Walsh to leave the final score at 1-18 to 3-6.
