Senior Footballers lose to Duffry

tgShels senior footballers lost to Duffry Rovers in the second round of the championship. 1-10 to 0-11.

Having accounted for Duffry Rovers by 10 points in the previous year, Shels were expected to account for them again. Shels started very well with 0-2 from Colin Redmond, 0-2 from Terry Gainfort (0-1 free) and 0-1 from Derek Walsh. Terry Gainfort also missed a free. This all happened in the first 10 minutes. Duffry opened their account after 19 minutes with a point from JJ Doyle. Duffry came more and more into the game now attacking strongly and putting Shels on the back foot. Shels and Duffry scored 0-2 each (Terry Gainfort and Garret Dunne for Shels) leaving the score at 0-7 to 0-3. But disaster struck now as we approached half time. David Walsh was alleged to have struck a Duffry player on the chest with his arm after he released the ball. A general pushing game by both sides occurred and David Walsh received a straight red.
In the second half the Shels attacked with two quick points by Derek Walsh and Terry Gainfort to leave the score at 0-9 to 0-3. However, Duffry were starting to take over at mid-field and replied with 0-3. Shels were struggling and had lost all shape. They did not score until the 11th minute again (Derek Walsh) and after that did not score until the 25th minute (Brian Doyle). During this period the Duffry grew in stature. They drew all play into the centre and pushed hard for a goal (Damien Fitzhenry) and 3 points. The Duffry were driving hard and the Shels failed to regain their shape. Joe Kelly kicked wide and then hit the post and that was the final Shels effort. Duffry worked hard and scored a further 0-2 to hold out for victory and secure their place in the ¼ finals.
