A good start for St Ibars in the senior camogie championship
The Wexford senior camogie championship commenced for St Ibars on Sunday 5th July with the
first round away to Ferns. This year sees St Ibars in the same group as Ferns, Monageer and
Rathnure, with the top two teams progressing to the semi-finals. The weather didn’t look favourably on the match but the heavy shower at the start of the match didn’t damper the spirits. St Ibars open the score with a point and continued the half in good scoring form with 3-4 on the board by the half time. Scores came from Jackie O’Connor (0-1), Michelle Hearne (1-0), Kate Kelly (0-3), and Katriona Parrock (2-0). In the same period, Ferns were to register one score, a goal at the start of the match, a testament to the tight defending of the backline. St Ibars had some good passages of play and moved the ball quickly and smartly. The second half saw Ferns add two points to bring their total tally to 1-2 for the match. However, St Ibars picked up where they left off at the end of the first half and added a further 1-4 to their tally. Scores in the second half came from Katriona Parrock (0-3), Shelly Doyle (0-1) and Michelle Hearne (1-0). St Ibars had many great performances around the pitch with a solid display from the defence, great drive from the mid field, and the forwards were too strong a match for the Ferns outfit. The final score St Ibars 4-8, Ferns 1-2.
The team was AnnMarie Kelly (Captain), Ciara Donohue, Sandy Carr, Fiona Cullen, Leona Tector, Kate Kelly, Shelly Doyle, Mag Kelly, Nikki Scallan, Niamh Potter, Katriona Parrock, Jackie O’Connor, Elaine Banville, Michelle Hearne, Dee McMahon (Vice Captain).
Next up for St Ibars is Monageer who will prove a strong test (Tuesday 28th July, in Hollymount at 7.30pm).
