Senior Football V Gusserane

Our senior team met Gusserane in the league on Tuesday evening in Hollymount. Despite Shels being two points up at half time, Gusserane found a second gear and finished strongly on a scoreline of 4-14 to 3-7.

A well contested first half with county player Adrian Flynn creating a lot of problems early on. Flynn did all the running in the first 10 minutes and set up a goal after two minutes with Garret Dunne and Colin Redmond replying for the Shels with a point each. Flynn continued to create problems and Gusserane were 1-4 to 0-2 ahead after 15 minutes. Colin Redmond dropped back to pick up Flynn and James Shiggins goaled to bring the Shels right back into the game. With C.Redmond in good form, the Shels started to dominate. A point by Derek Walsh, a good goal by Terry Gainfort and a ’45 by the same player put Shels ahead at the break by one point.
In the Second half the Gusserane fitness began to tell. Even though Derek Walsh goaled early on, Gusserane were creating problems in many areas. With Garret Dunne tiring and Cillian Kehoe and John Roche controlling mid-field, Shels were losing out. Darren Malone was introduced with 10 minutes to go and he made an immediate impact. But even though Shels scored 3 late points through T.Gainfort, Cathal Gaule and G.Dunne – Gusserane scored 3-0 in the last 12 minutes (1-0 Penalty) to run out convincing winners.
