Football 3rd team in tough contest

The third team had another spirited win tonight playing against St. Joseph’s second team.

With wind advantage, Ciaran Walsh put them 0-3(0-1 free) to 0-1 ahead after 12 minutes. The Shels were playing the better football with Shane Griffith very strong at wing back and Graham Lawler, Jamie Horan, John Nolan and Darren Shiggins controlling the central positions. The Shels finished the half strongly with  points from Graham Lawler, Cathal O’Shaughnessy and a fourth point from Ciaran Walsh to leave the half time score at 0-6 to 0-1.
In the second half John Hearne was introduced for Ciaran Walsh and James Doyle was introduced for Ciaran Murphy. St. Joseph’s attacked strongly with early points in the 6th and 7th minute. Cathal O’Shaughnessy responded for the Shels, but St. Josephs responded with 2 good points to leave the score at 0-7 to 0-5. With the wind in their backs, all the pressure was now on the Shels. Paddy ‘Shadow’ Kelly relieved the pressure with a point after 20 minutes. However a great cross by substitute Damien Breen set John Hearne up who did a lot of ‘basket-ball’ style work before finishing with a good goal. Paraic Scully added a point and the Shels looked home and dry. However, St. Josephs never gave up and a point followed by a very good goal from a close in free by ‘Fitzy’ put a close finish to a very entertaining and tough-fought contest.
