The Shels junior football team eased through the final group game at Piercestown last Saturday. With the aid of the breeze a dominant team performance powered the Shels to a 1-11 to 0-3 half-time lead, with 1-9 of that tally coming from play. During the opening period five of the Shels starting six forwards all recorded scores from play and with Daren Malone also contributing two points from midfield the contest was never in doubt. There was some amazing first half goal mouth action at both ends with the woodwork saving the Wexford town team no fewer than four times in the opening half. The Shels first goal finally came from Joe Kelly late in the first half when the Clonard keeper fumbled a long shot into the path of the corner forward who finished first-time to the net.
The second half was a much closer affair with the Wexford town side throwing everything at the over-the-water team but poor finishing from promising moves, including a penalty driven wide, undermined the fightback. John Veale landed an excellent long-range free kick to settle the leaders nerves and then the Shels stole a second goal when Conor Walsh finished well mid-way through the second half to stem the comeback. As the game wound down Clonard suffered a further setback when the referee dismissed one of their defenders rather harshly. The extra man advantage enabled the Shels to release Dennis Kelly into a free-man role and he popped up to score a point before finishing the game with a well taken goal in the dying minutes of the game (for the second match in succession).
