Shels U16 footballers continued their unbeaten run and qualified for the County Semi-Final with a hard fought eight point victory over a Gusserane/Bannow Ballymitty combination Castle Island Gaels in Gusserane last week. Indeed the scoreline doesn’t really reflect how close this game really was. The opening quarter was very tough with some hard tackling being the order of the day but the Shels boys stood up and led by two points before the home team goaled to take the lead. At half time our boys had regained the lead thanks to a James Gordon goal and were a point ahead. The second half was also point for point but by now the standard of play by both teams was of  very high quality with the Shels passing game giving them a four point lead only for the home team to hit back again with a goal to just leave the minimum between the teams. However it was at this stage that we saw the real heart of this team as with some superb team work and accurate shooting their started to pull away and when Fergal Hynes goaled it put our boys on the road to victory. The absence of championship action for over six weeks showed in the first half but when our backs were to the wall they really came on strong and played some delightful and classy football. This was a real team performance with all nineteen players used contributing to a really important victory. Roll on the semi-final.
