In the third round of the Leinster League, Shels came out on top of Dublin team Cuala
SHELMALIERS 4-16 CUALA 2-11
In their final match in the Leinster league the senior hurlers recorded a hard earned 11pt victory over a very good Cuala senior team out of Dublin. The slow starting Shels allowed Cuala go into a lead of 6pts to 2pts until a Stephen Banville fetch from a long Conor Byrne free was expertly put in the back of the net. A further free and they were level at 15 mins. A penalty awarded when Seamie Harding was taken out of it was well put away by Conor Byrne leaving the Shels going in at half-time fortunate to be in the lead 2-5 to 0-9. Aidan Murphy was unfortunate to sustain a broken finger during the first half.
A Shels team with a lot more urgency emerged in the second half, when moving the ball faster to the forwards the Shels attackers began to find scores with Des Kehoe having come on as a sub finding the net twice. Solid back play especially in the second half, Alan Griffith working his socks off in mid-field and sharp forward play where Chris McGrath, Tommy Barron were on song, all contributed to a well deserved victory.
