There has been a great response to the launch of the club's website www.shelmaliers.ie with a very large number of visitors to the site on its very first week since its launch. People have commented that they can now get the latest news, reports and results from all the clubs in Hollymount as soon as it happens in the comfort of their homes. The club would encourage people to visit it on a regular basis to not only inform yourself, but also to contribute to the continued development of the site. Final preparations are now in place for one of the ‘Big’ nights in the local GAA calendar when all roads lead to Enniscorthy greyhound track on August Bank Holiday Monday 6th August. This is the annual ‘Night at the Dogs’ organized by all the GAA clubs in the parish and the funds raised will go towards the Hollymount development fund. This is always a very enjoyable night for all those attending. So if you are an expert on spotting the form dogs or haven’t a clue on how to pick a winner why not come along for a great night of fun for the whole family. This year’s event also has the added attraction of, the best dressed lady competition, face painting and a fancy dress competition. So we invite everybody to come along for a good night’s entetainment.
There was no winner of the Shelmalier Development Draw last week with the prize money standing at €9000. There were five lucky winners of the match 3 and they were Craig McCabe, Margaret Cullen, Joe Cullen, Penny Kirwan and Colm Corrigan, where each received €40.
The Shelmalier Junior A hurling team got their first win of the group stages of the championship when they completely outclassed St. Fintans in Taghmon on Sunday last. The Shels raced in to an early lead with points from Tommie Barron, Cathal Gaule and three points from frees by Chris Wall. St Fintans struggled to stay with Shels but kept in touch a number of points from frees. A goal from Joe Kelly with 5 min to half time and further points from Cathal Gaule and Chris Wall left the Shels with a comfortable 1-10 to 0-6 lead at half time. The Shelmalier scorers in the first half were, Chris Wall 0-5, Joe Kelly 1-1, T. Barron 0-1, C. Gaul 0-2 and C. Byrne 0-1
The black and amber side continued to play some great hurling and when Conor Walsh scored a great goal after some great inter passing the game was over as a contest. Cathal Gaule, Joe Kelly and Tommie Barron then added further points, before the Shels ran out easy winners on the score line of 2-19 to 1-10. Good performances on the day came from Cathal Gaule, Eoin Doyle, Darren Malone, Joe Kelly, Conor Byrne and Chris Wall. The team's second half scores came from, C. Gaul 0-1, Eoin Doyle 0-1, W.O Shaughnessy, 0-1, Conor Walsh 1-1, T. Barron 0-1, C. Byrne 0-1, J. Kelly 0-2 and J. Redmond 0-1.
The under 14 hurlers drew 1-3 each with the Rapperees in the championship played in Hollymount on Friday night last. This was a game which the Rapps grabbed the equalizer in the dying moments with a well struck goal from a 21 yard free. The Shels were slow to start and allowed the Rapps to dictate the pace in the opening stages which saw them go in at half-time trailing by 3 points. However, it was a different Shels team in the second half as they completely dominated the half from start to finish. Glen Murphy was again the Shels goal scorer, with Craig McCabe contributing the points for the home team.
The Shelmalier under 14 footballers fought out an exciting 4-7 to 3-10 draw with Fethard in the championship played in Fethard on Wednesday last. The Shels got off to a great start when after some good team play Glen Murphy raised the green flag after 5 minutes. However, the visitors were unlucky to concede an own goal shortly afterwards. Shane Bieney put his team in front again with a great point, but Fethard hit back with three unanswered points, before Craig McCabe kicked over a point from a 45. The Shelmaliers were then awarded a penalty which Craig McCabe calmly slotted to the net, to give his team the initiative again. The same player completed the Shels scoring for the half with a further two points to put the sides level, but Fethard succeeded in finding the net again on the stroke of half time, to leave a half time score of 2-4 to 3-4 in favour of the home team. Shane Birney skillfully flicked the ball to the net after five minutes and Glen Murphy got his second goal to put the Shelmaliers into the lead. However, Fethard hit back with four points of their own to regain the lead but Craig McCabe slotted over two further points to give his team the narrowest of leads as the game entered extra time. To the amazement of the visiting fans the ref decided to play an extra five minutes in a game of little stops and just before the final whistle did blow Fethard got the all important point to level the match.
The Shels minor football team was pushed all the way by a dogged Clongeen team on a wet and sticky pitch at Hollymount. The home side started brightly with three quick points before Clongeen responded and for the rest of the first half there was little between the teams. The first half produced snatches of good football by both teams with good combined approach play often spoiled by very poor finishing. A late first half goal by Shane Murphy, from a Joe Kelly cross goal-mouth pass, helped the Shels into a 1-5 to 0-3 lead.
Midway through the second half a fisted goal from a long range free brought Clongeen back into the game leaving the margin at 2 points. However, late points by Conor Byrne (free) and Conor Walsh helped the Shels to maintain the 2 point lead to the end despite constant pressure from the visitors.
