Under 16 Football Division 1, Round 6
Shelmaliers Vs Munerane Gaels
Date: 23/7/07
The Shels U16 footballers overcame Munerane Gaels (Taghmon and Gusserane) in a very competitive game played in Hollymount on Monday evening. The Shels started brightly with John Cambell pointing in the first minute after taking a neat pass from Glenn Murphy before racing through the Munerane Gaels defence. Munerane Gaels responded with a pointed free in the 6th minute from Barry O’Gorman. The Shelmaliers dominated proceedings for the next 10 minutes scoring 5 points without reply, 2 each for Fergal Hynes and Alan Rossitor and 1 for Kevin O’Leary. However their lead should have been much greater as they missed 2 glorious goal chances which were both put wide of the posts. Munerane Gaels capitalised on this let off by scoring 1-02 without reply to lead by 1-04 to 0-06 after 22 minutes. Fergal Hynes levelled matters in the 26th minute before Alan Rossitor and Barry O’Gorman traded points in the final minute of the half to leave the sides level at 0-08 to 1-05 at half time.
The opening exchanges of the second half were tough and uncompromising with neither side being able to make inroads through the opposition defence. The opening score of the half arrived after 11 minutes when Fergal Hynes pointed a 45m free and the same player doubled the Shels advantage with another pointed free in the 16th minute. The Shels really began to turn the screw after this with some tenacious defending shutting out any chance of a response from the Gaels. Further points from Kevin O’Leary, Shane Griffith, Brendan Fitzgerald, Fergal Hynes and John Cambell left the Shels 7 points ahead after 25 minutes. Munerane Gaels threw everyone forward in the final minutes and were rewarded with a goal and a point but Fergal Hynes scored a fine goal in the last minute to leave the victorious by 1-15 to 2-06.
