The Shelmaliers played the first round of the Junior hurling league championship in Bellfield on Sunday 27th May against the Duffry Rovers, going down on a score line of 0-8 to1-13. The Shelmaliers played with the aid of a fierce wind in the first half and controlled the game for most of the half, leading by 2-7 to 1-1 at half time. The Duffry only came into the game in the last five minutes of the half when registering their first score, a goal against the run of play. The Shels played well, especially after losing Tommie Barron after 5 minutes with a hamstring injury. First half scorers for the Shels were,
Tommie Barron 0-1, J .Redmond 0-1, C. Wall 1-1, B. Murphy 1-0. E. O’Leary 0-1, J. Kelly 0-2 and C. Carr 0-1.
The black and amber defence came under great pressure in the second half and conceded a goal after 7 minutes to bring Duffry into the game. With 11 minutes remaining, the Shels still led by 2 points but could not get the scores to stretch their lead, having to move Chris Wall to midfield. The Duffry Rovers finished stronger to win by 3 points ( 2-8 to 2-11), with Chris Wall the only scorer for the Shelmaliers in this half.
